Women: Blacklight Paintings & Sculpture

May 4 – June 30, 2012

Opening Reception:  Friday, May 4, 6 9pm

CHARLES BANK GALLERY is pleased to present Women: Blacklight Painting and Sculptures, a solo exhibition by New York-based artist Ryan McGinness.

For the first time in a public exhibition, McGinness is revealing his entire working process for creating the personal visual language that is the hallmark of his artistic style.  To best showcase that process, McGinness has created an exhibition in two parts: Uptown, Gering & Lopez Gallery will be showing an all black and white exhibit of McGinness’ sketches and drawings.   Downtown, on the Lower East Side, Charles Bank Gallery will be showing the fluorescent blacklight paintings and sculptures that are the finished result.

Ryan McGinness is known worldwide for his extensive vocabulary of graphic drawings that use the visual language of public signage, corporate logos and contemporary iconography.   For the Women series, McGinness has continued to expand that vocabulary by continuously drawing live models, and then processing those drawings over several stages into simplified, iconic forms.   Through the process, McGinness is able to better understand his subject matter, as well as discover and present what is inherently sensual to him about his models.

The Blacklight Paintings and Sculpture exhibit at Charles Bank Gallery will encompass two levels of exhibition space, and a series of exhibition related programs will be posted on the gallery’s website.   www.charlesbankgallery.com
